About This Project

  • This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing and destroying landfill methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, preventing it from leaking into the atmosphere.  Carbon credit sales provide the necessary funding for the construction and ongoing operation of this project
  • Methane destruction also produces renewable electricity that powers local homes and businesses, displacing the need for fossil fuel electricity generation.
  • The Santa Marta Landfill is an existing and operational landfill site located 17 km south of Santiago.  It started operation in 2002 and serves as one of the most important landfills in the region, supporting a population of around 1,200,000 inhabitants.
  • The project consists of the installation of landfill gas extraction wells, collection system infrastructure, blower/flare, gas compression and cleanup, and a power generation facility.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
